Regional brewers appear to be gaining increasing stock market support. Despite all the analysts' arguments about vertically integrated businesses not making sense, Greene King, Young's, Fullers, Hardys & Hansons, Shepherd Neame

and, most spectacularly, Belhaven all saw their stock market value grow in the two months to July. Former brewer Burtonwood also put on value.

The growth is revealed in the Sector Shopping List figures featured in the latest July/August issue of the M&C Report newsletter.

Scottish brewer Belhaven saw its market cap grow over 35% in two months. Greene King was up 10.5%, Fullers up 19% and Hardys & Hansons 18%.

The most notable regional brewer to miss out on this up-beat reaction was Wolverhampton & Dudley, whose shares remained just 1% up over the period, despite the continuing takeover saga.

Of course, if you really want to boost your market worth, go on a buying spree. Enterprise Inns, is doing just that, and saw its market cap climb 40% from £402m to £564m.

Other good performers over the early summer were a recovering City Centre Restaurants, ahead 16.5%, and Inventive Leisure, the vodka bar operator, up 15.5%. The value of Kingfisher Leisure shares also jumped 34% ahead of its takeover.

The biggest losers were generally among the smaller companies in the bottom half of M&C Report's listing of 52 stocks. BRG fell back 20.7% in value, Mezzanine was down 10%, Pubs'n'Bars down 18%, Hartford down 18.9%, Groupe Chez Gerard down 25.6%, Gaucho Grill down 11.6%, Giardino down 15.6% and Coffee Republic down 37.2 in value.

These performances again raise the question of how long some of the smaller players can afford to stay as publicly-quoted companies?
