The Daily Telegraph’s Jasper Gerard dined at St Werbughs City Farm in Bristol, which he describes as a “scruffy, appealing and terribly right-on in a 1970s sort of way” place. But, he adds, the farm cafe serves excellent simple food at reasonable prices. His burger was fabulous, complemented with blue cheese and sublime onion and marmalade relish. Gerard says he has eaten far less well in smart London restaurants. Osteria Emilia in Fleet Road, Hampstead, London, is a very good local Italian restaurant and far better than anything else in the area, according to Giles Coren, writing in The Times. The staff are still finding their feet, things get spilt and there are occasional intense language problems. But Coren expresses pleasure that these are with Italian “rather than some Central European tongue bearing no relation to the origin of the dishes”. The restaurant also had the “most charming, smiliest waiter” Coren had ever seen, but the scowling bald man stood in the doorway (who turned out to be the owner’s father) was the scariest person he had ever seen.
