Mark Palmer of The Daily Telegraph visits Wild Honey in London’s Mayfair, a sister restaurant to the Michelin-starred Arbutus in Soho. Awarding it 8 out of 10, Palmer raves over the helpful and speedy service, the “sublime cooking and exemplary pricing”, the “sensational” starters, “memorable” main courses and “dreamily wild” desserts. Giles Coren of The Times visits the “glorious” Wellington Arms in Baughurst, Hampshire. The food is organic, the steaks are “juicy, powerfully flavoured and tender”, the sticky toffee pudding is the best his companions have ever had, the espresso is “perfect” and the rhubarb, strawberry and champagne jelly is “worthy of Pied a Terre or The Fat Duck”. He calls the restaurant “really special” and awards the meal 9 out of 10. Tracy MacLeod of The Independent reviews the East Beach Café in Littlehampton, the much-publicised architectural marvel designed by Thomas Heatherwick. A former Ritz chef supervises the kitchen and the menu concentrates on fish and seafood, with everyday lunch dishes such as bacon sandwiches and fish and chips appearing alongside more upmarket fare. MacLeod praises the “burstingly fresh” moules marinieres, the “authentically spicy” salt and pepper squid and the “high standard” of the fish and chips served in a zinc bucket with beer batter, as well as the originality of the décor and the “commitment and passion” of the whole restaurant operation. Matthew Norman of The Guardian reviews Geales in London’s Notting Hill. A refurbished fish and chip shop, it has recently reopened under new ownership. Unfortunately the refurbishment is “a desecration” – the former “sweet, dowdy place serving great comfort food” has become “a nasty, cynical clip joint”. Portion sizes have been reduced, prices raised, and the food is poor. The mushy peas are “like bullets”, the crab is badly-cooked, the chips are lukewarm and a potentially excellent fish soup has been watered down to make it go further. He awards the restaurant just 3 out of 10.
