International shopping centre operator Westfield Group is to introduce its indoor food market concept to the UK, featuring stalls selling a variety of foods from across the world, at its new site in Stratford, east London. Sixteen stalls will initially operate at the Great Eastern Market at the Westfield Stratford Centre, located at the entrance to the 32,000 sq ft Waitrose food store, when the centre opens in September. Billed as a “modern interpretation of a traditional market, within an original and unique trading space”, it will also feature a kitchen for cooking demonstrations. Bill Giouroukos, director of operations at Westfield, said: “Drawing inspiration from our East London locale and successful markets around the world, this new concept will offer a traditional food market within a contemporary and commercial environment. “We have extensive experience of this in Australia where we have operated over 30 food markets and we are excited to debut a unique market concept in the UK.” Also confirmed for the new site are restaurant brands Giraffe, Gourmet Burger Company, Burger King, Las Iguanas, Strada, Jom Makan, Pizza Express, Nandos, Wagamama and TGI Friday. The Westfield Group has investment interests in 119 shopping centres in the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand.
