Police in north Somerset have appointed an "alcohol-related crime reduction officer" believed to be the first role of its type in the country. The officer, PC Karl Waltho, will oversee the implementation of the new licensing regime. PC Waltho said: "The principle target is to help reduce the increase in violent crime, which is often fuelled by alcohol." Chief Superintendent Tracy Hayler, the north Somerset district commander, said: "We have received a welcome and very positive response from the majority of licensees. However, Karl’s role, along with our partners, is to take a robust line with premises that breach the legislation."
