Chumley's restaurant in Reading has been gutted by a fire, which started in a chip pan in the outlet's kitchen.

Diners did not realise the seriousness of the fire until they were evacuated. One customer said: "Everyone stayed on and finished their drinks. I didn't realise how bad it was until I came outside and saw the flames."

The outlet, which is owned by Regent Inns, is one of a chain of four. The other three sites are in Rugby, Exeter and Wimbledon.
