Bel Canto, the Parisian restaurant where the staff are opera singers, is to expand the concept to the UK, with the acquisition of a site in the City of London. Jean Paul Morel, the restaurant’s founder, has acquired the site of the former Just Gladwins eaterie on Mark Lane for an undisclosed sum. The 6,157sq ft basement outlet is to be turned into a 90-cover restaurant, as part of plans to rollout a chain of Bel Canto venues in the UK. In France, Morel operates two sites in Paris in Neuilly and on the Quai Hotel de Ville, where the waiters and waitresses are also opera students from the Paris Conservatoire. Peter Gladwin, owner of Just Gladwins, said that he had sold the outlet to concentrate on his other restaurant Just St James/Just Oriental in St James’s. Christie & Co handled the sale.
