Paddy & Scott, the East Anglia-based coffee shop operator, is planning to continue its high-street roll-out to grow its estate to 20–30 sites in the next five years, co-founder Paddy Bishopp told M&C Report.

The company is preparing to open its third high street cafe in Hadleigh, which will be its third in Suffolk after launching its first public-facing store in Framlingham in 2013, which was followed by Bury St Edmonds in October.

“Our plan is to dominate East Anglia then as opportunities come up we would spread out,” Bishopp said. “In the next three years we would think we could get to 20 and in three to five years we could get to 30.”

He said they are considering locations across Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Following the opening of the third site Bishopp said the company will “take stock” before ramping up expansion.

Bishopp said both the Framlingham and Bury St Edmonds cafes have “improved month on month” and have seen high levels of loyalty with 65% of customers being returning regulars.

Independently-owned Paddy & Scott’s began supplying its coffee to farm shops and delicatessens across East Anglia and nationwide before making the move into supplying hotels, restaurants and contract catering at corporate offices. It trades under the Made with Love by Paddy & Scott sub-brand that has also been introduced to hardware chain B&Q’s stores nationwide after trialling the first Paddy & Scott’s public café in B&Q’s refurbished store in Poole, Dorset.

“The B&Q café really made us think we can go on the high street and have a Paddy & Scott’s offering run by us. We wanted to have full control as a big part is the staff, the welcome and the interaction with customers.”

The company, which was founded by Bishopp and business partner Scott Russell in 2007, has more than 50 branded coffee shops across the country in corporate offices, which form the core of the business. In 2014 the company sold 35 million branded cups of coffee across its network of branded corporate cafes.

Meanwhile, the group is expanding its existing supply deal with pub operator JW Lees to supply Paddy & Scott’s branded coffee to its entire estate. The coffee was trialled at 11 initial site and its soon to be rolled out to another 14 of its pubs before Made with Love by Paddy & Scott’s coffee is available across the whole estate.
