Members of the Aslef union will stage industrial action on 5 January, adding to the RMT strikes already planned for 3-4 and 6-7 January.

Train drivers from 15 different rail companies, including: Southeastern, Great Northern/Thameslink, East Midlands Railway, Southern/Gatwick Express and CrossCountry.

Aslef said drivers did not want to go on strike but had been “pushed” to do so by the train companies, according to a report by the BBC.

Aslef boss Mick Whelan said: “The train companies say their hands have been tied by the government. While the government – which does not employ us – says it’s up to the companies to negotiate with us.”

Normal train services are currently due to resume on 9 January.
