Bartenders, waiters, hotel staff and chefs will get by with just five to six hours of sleep a night this Christmas, according to research by drinks distributor Matthew Clark.

Some 64% of hospitality workers say that they very regularly miss out on sleep, especially over the festive period with nearly 10% getting by on just three to four hours’ sleep.

Over a lifetime in the industry, workers will miss out on over 120 hours of sleep over the festive period alone – five whole days.

The research reveals that those in the industry will be working an extra 28 hours over the festive period – the time it takes to pour 840 pints of Guinness or cook 168 steaks.

Matthew Clark, which is encouraging staff to save time by ordering online, commissioned a sample of 1,000 people from the sector for the research.
