HMV, the high street music retailer, is to reopen a Birmingham concert venue and nightclub following a £1.75m refurbishment later this year. The HMV Institute becomes the music retailer’s fifth entry into the live music arena following its £46m acquisition of the MAMA Group in January this year. The 1500, 600 and 300 capacity multi-room live music and club venue in the Digbeth area of the city is set to reopen in September. The site has been shut for most of the year following refurbishment works to the listed building, which were undertaken by Birmingham City Council. It will join HMV’s portfolio, which includes the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, HMV Forum, HMV Picture House and the Jazz Café. The retailer, which last month unveiled a 17.7% growth in profit before tax and exceptional items to £74.2m, has heralded the live music and late night sector as potential areas for growth moving forward. The company was also subject to speculation regarding a possible link up with Luminar, the embattled operator behind Oceana nightclubs.
