The last strip club has closed in the Australian "frontier town" of Darwin, which once prided itself on a reputation for hard-drinking and a boisterous nightlife.

Fifteen girls would dance naked on tables at Sinsations, in the Don Hotel, cheered on by crowds of 300 drooling men.

But now the building is being converted into a backpackers' hostel.

The Northern Territory city used to be famous for its "prawn and porn sessions", where a few dollars would buy a plate off barbecued prawns and a cold beer in a strip joint.

Now, though, pubs and bars are trying instead to attract women and professionals as customers.

Greg Weller, local executive director of the Australian Hotels' Association, admitted it was a bit sad and the end of an era.
