SA Brain, the Cardiff-based brewer and leisure operator, has appointed Bruce Newman, formerly of Danone, as its new group head of marketing, M&C Report understands.

Newman takes up the newly created role, which seems him report directly to chief executive Scott Waddington, after a year and a half as marketing controller for the £160m Cow & Gate brand at Danone.

He also spent over five years at Kraft Foods, leading the brand and business development of the group’s cheese brands including Philadelphia and Dairylea.

Last year, Brains announced a company restructure that saw the abolition of a separate sales and marketing division and the departure of sales and marketing director Richard Davies.

The sales and marketing functions are being incorporated into a new commercial division, which will include brewery operations and sales.

A retail division includes all Brains’ managed and tenanted pubs, plus restaurants, hotels and its coffee chain Coffee#1.

Finally, a reconfigured finance and business process division will manage all support processes across the company.

Last month, the group announced that Philip Lay, retail director, would leave the business at the end of this month, after 12 years with the company.
