McDonald's is to open 240 new restaurants across Europe and create 12,000 new jobs, in the group's biggest expansion in the region in five years. "We're certainly not slowing down," Dennis Hennequin, president of McDonald's Europe, told the FT. He claimed there were "no signs of weakening" in Europe, although consumers were favouring cheaper menu items, particularly in German and Spain. The sites will be mostly located in Spain, France, Italy, Russia and Poland. The group is also planning to add around 400 McCafes to the 800 it has in Europe. The group is expected to see Q4 profits rise by 10%. FT weekend, page 18
