Like-for-like sales in the retail sector increased by 1.2% last month - as shoppers bought party food and new televisions for the World Cup. The British Retail Consortium said it was the best sales performance since March. Television sets were top sellers as World Cup viewers took advantage of the promotions – although sales petered out after England's exit. Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said the sector enjoyed "decent" sales growth last month, especially against a very strong June last year when hot weather also lifted sales. He said the Chancellor's Budget was already affecting confidence, but that the full impact would not hit spending until the measures, such as a VAT rise to 20% come into effect.
