New research has found that food in half of the restaurants, schools and hospitals in some parts of the country could cause food poisoning because of the low standards of kitchen hygiene.

Consumer group Which? named Enfield, North London as the worst area – with 54% of establishments failing to achieve basic hygiene standards.

Edinburgh was the second worst with only 68% of kitchens up to standard.

By contrast, in other areas more than nine in 10 establishments were judged to meet minimum hygiene standards.

Cherwell in the South East and Brentwood and Brozbourne in the East made up the top three, with at least 96% making the grade.

Alongside Enfield, five other London councils made up the bottom 10 - Lewisham, Ealing, Harrow, Camden and Bent.
