A petition pushing for a minister of hospitality has surpassed its target of 100,000 signatures, meaning parliament must now consider the topic for debate.

Almost 150,000 people have signed the online petition so far, which is calling for a dedicated minister to liaise with industry representatives, listen to concerns on taxation and legislation and propose suggestions to the chancellor and policy makers on behalf of the sector.

Over 100 industry figures joined forces last week to launch a 30-day social media campaign - #Seatatthetable - promoting the petition.

Founded by Home Grown Hotels chairman and CEO Robin Hutson, the campaign has been supported by the likes of Tom Kerridge, Angela Hartnett and Jamie Oliver.

Currently, representation for hospitality in parliament is split between the department of business, energy and industrial strategy and the department of digital, culture, media and sport.
