Subway has opened its 1,000th UK & Ireland site and said that its anticipates it will overtake McDonald’s in terms of store count by the middle of next year. The company opened three stores on the same day to take it to the 1,000th mark, including sites in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, and Stalybridge in Greater Manchester. The group, which is currently opening an average of six stores a week, said it had a further 300 franchises sold with these stores waiting to be developed. It plans to open 2,010 sites by 2010 in the UK. Kevin Graham, regional director for Europe, Israel and South Africa, said: “The level of growth we’ve experienced in the UK and Ireland is a fantastic achievement. “It reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of the development agents and franchisees, together with the power of the Subway brand and the strength of its systems, policies and procedures.”
