Greggs, the c1,600-strong high street bakery and café operator, has hired Tony Rowson, former regional operations director at Costa Coffee, to oversee the rollout of its Moment coffee shop format, increasing the likelihood that it intends to expand the brand nationwide. It is thought that Rowson, who had been with Costa for the last eight years, will head up the expansion of the Moment brand and also oversee coffee sales across its existing estate. Launched last year in Newcastle, the chain, which is led by Ken McMeikan, has since opened another four sites under the brand in Staines, Stevenage, Middlesbrough and a further site in Newcastle at the Metrocentre. The group is set decide by the end of this year whether to roll out the coffee brand nationwide. Earlier this McMeiken said: “I'm a great admirer of what (Whitbread's) Costa Coffee have done and the question for Greggs is: Can we learn at pace and take a much bigger slice of the coffee market?”
