Japanese drinks company Asahi is understood to be lining up a $3.4bn bid for Peroni and Grolsch.

According to the Yomiuri newspaper, Asahi is planning to make a bid as early as next week. If the deal is accepted it would be one of the biggest international acquisitions by a Japanese company of all time.

The sale comes as AB InBev seeks to neutralise completion concerns over its takeover of SABMiller. It has also pledged to sell craft beer brand Meantime, which SAB acquired last year.

Other frontrunners for Peroni and Grolsch are thought to include private equity firms KKR and Cinven or other drink companies such as Heineken, Molson Coors, C & C Group and Mahou-San Miguel.
