Nomura's decision to pull out of its purchase of London's Millennium Dome has taken its toll on Guy Hands, according to an interview with the company's dealmaker in the Financial Times.

Hands, who first came to prominence five years ago when he bought 1,800 pubs from GrandMet and Fosters for £250m, says that worry over his deals affects him very badly. An old friend of William Hague, he also denies accusations that the pullout was calculated to embarrass the government.

Nomura has bought First Quench, which owns the Thresher, Victoria Wine, Wine Rack and Bottoms Up chains of off-licences, for £225m.
