Diageo has entered a battle which it cannot lose, according to The Daily Telegraph's "Questor" column. If it succeeds in winning Seagram's wine and spirits business, it will secure many more top spirits brands.

If it loses out to Alied Domecq, it will gain "a competitive advantage" as its main rival will be tied up with integration concerns.

Meanwhile, Charles Stanley advises holding Allied shares at 345p.
