Wasabi, the London-based sushi and bento chain led by Dong Hyun Kim, is to make its debut in the Midlands, after securing a site in Birmingham, M&C understands.

The 42-strong group has lined up a site in the city’s New Street Station for an opening before the end of the year.

The Birmingham site is one of eight the group has in its openings pipeline including two further units in New York and at Luton Airport.

The company is also set to add to its estate in London, with sites secured in Borough High Street, Broadgate, Ealing Broadway Shopping Scheme and St Pancras Square.

The group saw turnover reach £63m in 2014 and Kim said he believed it had a strong platform for future expansion, both in the UK and internationally.

A centralised production kitchen in Park Royal, West London, is due to come on-line next year to significantly increase Wasabi’s production capacity as it gears up for further expansion.
