Starbucks has opened its first store at the Great Wall of China, through its licensed developer Beijing Mei Da Coffee Co. Starbucks, which opened in China in 1999, has about 140 outlets in China, 57 with Beijing Mei Da Coffee. The news came as the group announced the establishment of the Starbucks China Education Project, a $5m commitment to support educational programmes in China. Starbucks said it planned to develop "a strategic corporate social responsibility platform to strengthen its philanthropic and social commitments in China". "At Starbucks, our commitment to social responsibility is an integral part of our culture and business practices," said Howard Schultz, chairman of Starbucks. "In China, we believe our philanthropic commitments will be significant, substantive and long-term."
