SA Brain chief executive Scott Waddington has told MCA that the appointment of the first director of Coffee#1 reflects the rapid progress that has been made since the Welsh brewer acquired the brand in 2011.

Bruce Newman, who was head of marketing for the wider group, now heads up Coffee#1 with the brand increasingly operating as a separate business.

MCA understands that the process to assess funding optiosn for the brand continues.

Separately, the group has entered into a period of consultation with some employees following the sale of the bulk of its English pubs estate and the reconfiguring of its brewing business.

On the Coffee# changes, Waddington told MCA: “It’s a natural move because over Bruce was already spending 85% on Coffee#1 so now he will be devoting 100% to that. It’s part of a gradual move to strengthen the resources for that brand as we continue to expand. Nothing has changed in terms of the strategy or the operation of the stores. It’s a great business and we want to do all we can to support it.”

Although Newman’s title is director, he will not sit on the SA Brain board, Waddington confirmed.
