Potbelly, the US sandwich chain, has closed its only site in the UK, three years after it launched, MCA understands.
In 2015, the company, which has over 400 sites in the US, signed a master franchise agreement with Buraq Retail (Potbelly) Ltd, a company backed by Sheikh Holdings, to open a 1,870 sq ft, 90-cover site in Westfield Stratford City.
The company has said its initial target is to have 10 sites in London within the next five years.
That sole site at Westfield Stratford has now closed.
Sheikh Holdings Ddirector Akbar Sheikh told MCA at the time of the initial franchise deal that he believed the brand could have the same impact in the UK as it has had in America.
Potbelly said it saw London as a gateway city for a future expansion into the rest of Europe.
