Greggs, the c1,600-strong high street bakery and café operator, has opened its national barista trading academy in the Midlands for its Moment coffee shop format.

The training centre has been opened at the group’s latest Moment site in the Mell Square Shopping Centre in Solihull.

The group is planning to open a further two sites across the Midlands under the six-strong brand, with a unit at the Merryhill Shopping Centre in Dudley already secured.

Earlier this year, the company said it planned to open a further three Moment coffee shops across the Midlands and then review the concept to decide on its “roll-out potential”.

The group gave an indication of its intentions with the appointment of Tony Rowson, former regional operations director at Costa Coffee, as its new head of coffee, late last year.

Launched in Newcastle in 2011, the chain has since opened sites under the brand in Staines, Stevenage, Middlesbrough and a further unit in Newcastle at the Metrocentre.
