Compass Group, the global contract foodservice company, is to launch its own coffee shop concept called Bateman & Co, MCA understands.

Described as an “artisan retail coffee shop concept”, this first site under the new venture is set to launch later this month at the Boxpark scheme in Croydon.

It is thought that a further unit under the new concept will open within a retail store in Bristol.

It is thought that the name of the new concept derives from Jack Bateman, who founded factory canteens to feed British workers supporting the war effort. In 1967, the company was acquired by Grand Metropolitan and the catering business became Compass Services in 1984.

Last October, Compass partnered with coffee specialists Nick and Andrew Tolley from Taylor St Baristas, and formerly of Harris + Hoole, as part of a companywide review of its coffee strategy.

The Tolley brothers, while supporting Compass’ central marketing team, would carry out the review, which would touch on points from organisational design to coffee education and training.

Compass said the partnership would allow it to grow within the UK coffee market which, according to Allegra report 2015, is worth an estimated £7.9b and predicted to double by 2025.
