Coffee bars continue to proliferate in Britain's major cities, according to a feature in The Guardian. The Costa chain is the current market leader in the UK, with plans for 256 outlets by the end of the year, ahead of Starbucks with 115.

Independent coffee bars are also springing up in London, such as Cuppa-cino which opened its first outlet in Clapham Junction railway station last summer. Owners Andrew Roberts and Amanda Fletcher plan to open 7-8 more bars in unconventional locations.

co-owner of the Italian Coffee Company in Worcester plans ten new outlets within the next two years. John Kavaliauskas is launching a new cafe business called Organic Xpress, which will open its first London outlet selling organic coffee in the summer.
