Café de Nata is strengthening its presence in London, as it seeks to become the go-to brand in the UK for Portuguese custard tarts.

The Portuguese-inspired bakery-café business is opening on 209-210 Chalk Farm Road, Camden, its fourth site in London.

Specialising in pastel de nata, the company is looking to expand across London, the UK and the world, to become the leading global chain for the speciality pastry.

Developed by monks of the Jeronimos Monastery in Portugal before the 18th century, the pastry is one of Portugal’s most famous exports, and is typically served with a bica (espresso).

Café de Nata is led by CEO Abdul Virji, a chartered accountant, alongside co-founder and COO Husein Virji.

The company is advised by Nuno Soares, senior managing partner at Excellium Capital Partners, and formerly of Citibank and Diageo.
