Belgo has closed its loss-making New York restaurant and is transforming it from a Belgian beer-and-mussels outfit into an Indian eaterie after the original concept failed to catch on.

The restaurant stopped taking bookings three days ago and an answering machine message tells customers their nearest branch is ... in London.

Located in Manhattan's East Village, the restaurant opened in 1999 at a cost of around £2.4m. It was facing stiff competition from other Belgian restaurants in the area.
