Confidence levels in the sector shot up following news of the vaccine, Lumina Intelligence’s Hospitality Leaders Poll reveals.

The rise in optimism was measured but unequivocal, with a sharp rise in operators saying they were quite confident, from 33% last week to 56% this week.

Those who said they were unconfident in the future of the business fell sharply by 14 percentage points week on week, from 47% to 33%.

The poll, commissioned by MCA, reveals operators are very optimistic (18%) or fairly optimistic (52%) the vaccine will provide a viable pathway out of the lockdown cycle.

However a significant number of operators (29%) said they would have to reappraise their staffing levels as a result of the postponement of the Jobs Retention Scheme bonus, which rewards businesses for keeping on staff.
