Hospitality Leaders Poll

The announcement of a furlough extension as soon as possible is a priority for sector leaders, with many unable to plan properly until such support is confirmed, Lumina Intelligence’s Hospitality Leaders Poll reveals.

With uncertainty remaining over the future of the scheme, 88% of respondents said it will be important for their planning that an extension is announced now, rather than in the 3 March Budget, with 62% stating it will be “very” or “extremely” important.

The call for an extension of furlough isn’t altogether surprising, as two thirds (64%) of operators asked said they are still unable to trade for takeaway and delivery in the latest lockdown. Notably, 71% of respondents in this week’s poll were pub operators.

Another source of concern is Brexit, with 63% of operators anticipating a rise in ingredients prices when they are allowed to reopen. Of those currently able to operate, 75% said they had already been impacted by ingredients shortages, and 90% said they had already been impacted by price rises.

Business confidence saw a slight dip this week, with 62% of leaders remaining confident about the future of their business (down from 67% last week). Over a third (38%) said they were not confident about the future.
