Despite concerns about obesity and health warnings from the government, McDonald’s is selling more burgers in the UK than ever before. Just over 88 million people bought a McDonald’s in December 2007, an increase of nearly 10 million on the same period the year before. In an interview with The Times, Steve Easterbrook, chief executive of McDonald’s UK, said that with three weeks of its current financial to run, like-for-like sales were up nearly 6%, close to the best rate since 1987. Easterbrook said: “This is one of out strongest years for 20 years, and we feel pretty confident about the momentum we have built up.” The company, which has around 1,200 sites in the UK, plans to invest £40m modernising around 200 of its drive thru outlets, after updating around 140 of its oldest high street restaurants last year.
