McDonald’s is to launch its own meat-free burger the McPlant and launch its own plant-based products.

The move follows a decision in April to halt a pilot programme in Canada to sell products made by Beyond Meat.

According to Ian Borden, McDonald’s international president, the McPlant line also could include chicken-substitute products and even breakfast items.

The company said that, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, it was testing automated order-taking, dedicated drive-through lanes for online orders and new restaurant designs.

It was also testing its own delivery service in countries including Australia and Germany.

Yesterday the fast-food giant reported a 2.2% fall in same-store sales in the third quarter, well ahead of the 23.9% slump in the second quarter.

The improvement came as countries around the world lifted lockdowns during the summer, enabling its restaurants to reopen.

However, in recent weeks countries including France, Germany, Canada and Britain have brought in new lockdowns or trading restrictions, presaging a fresh dip in trading.
