As part of an on-going campaign for honest food labelling the Sunday Telegraph has criticised the fast-food operators Subway and KFC.

It said there was no obligation for the operators to detail the country of origin of the chicken it uses in its dishes.

It said the companies were sourcing chicken from countries like Uruguay, Thailand and Brazil.

It said the distance involved could mean the chicken has been frozen for a month before reaching the UK.

A spokesman for Subway, whose slogan is “Eat Fresh”, said it was open and transparent with regards to where it sourced its poultry. It added its “Eat Fresh” slogan referred to the sandwiches being made in front of the customer.

KFC said it made sure its suppliers met or exceeded UK guidelines and EU legislation.
