Five Guys, the popular US better burger chain, is to make its debut in Spain later this year, after securing a site in Madrid.

The joint venture between the brand and Sir Charles Dunstone has secured a 735sqm site spread over three floors in the city’s upscale shopping street – Gran Via.

At the same time, M&C understands that the group, which has 40 sites in the UK, has secured Marston’s last remaining Que Pasa-branded site in Watford for an opening later this year.

On the opening in Spain, Five Guys JV managing director John Eckbert said: “We began to think about the possibility of opening in Spain after the opening of our first store in the UK in July 2013. We are started to actively seek a site a few months ago and we are very pleased to have found quality space so quickly.”

The group is also believed to be close to confirming its launch in Paris and is also looking at opportunities in Germany.

The company, which hopes to open up to 30 sites in the UK this year, has already secured sites in The Lighthouse development on Pentonville Road, King’s Cross and the former Shimla Pinks site in Birmingham for openings in the first quarter.

Five Guys UK is also looking at further opportunities in Exeter, Watford, Luton and Aberdeen.

AG&G is believed to have acted on the Watford deal.
