JD Wetherspoon, the managed pub operator, has opened The Mardi Gras, at the Trafford Centre in Manchester. The company has invested £995,000 in developing the outlet, on the site of the former Dexter’s bar and grill, in The Orient, at the complex. The pub name refers to its location in the French Quarter of the shopping centre’s bar and restaurant gallery, where there are many references to jazz, including a statue of Louis Armstrong. The company already runs eight pubs in Manchester city centre, The Moon Under Water in Deansgate; The Paramount in Oxford Road; The Waterhouse in Princess Street; The Manchester and County in Piccadilly; The Ford Maddox Brown in Oxford Road; The Seven Stars in Dantzic Street; Castle in the Air in Trafford Way; and The Great Central in Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield.
