Family brewer and pub operator Wadworth’s contract brewing operation has recorded a bumper yield in the past 18 months, brewing more than 9,000 barrels of contract beer.

The Devizes-based operator said a focus on offering bespoke beers and lagers has proven a significant business opportunity.

Jonathan Thomas, sales director for Wadworth, said: “This has been a great period of growth in contract brewing for our business where we have been able to provide a range of services to large and small breweries of both cask, craft beer and lager.

“We are looking at further growing our volumes in this area over the next three years,” he added. “We know this is a growth area for Wadworth as we see capacity stretch with major brewers or the smaller craft brewers.”

Thomas told MCA that contract brewing has always been a feature of its brewing capability, “but it became a much more significant component of our business strategy two years ago”.

While it currently makes up less than 10% of its revenue, its contract brewing business “is an area which is clearly growing”, he added.

Wadworth operates more than 200 pubs across the south west of England.
