Bars and restaurants in Spain have largely ignored no-smoking regulations introduced at the beginning of 2006.
Although a ban came into force on January 1 2006, only 10% of small bars and 15% of small restaurants have enforced it. About 85% of larger premises also fail to provide smokers with their own areas and even hospital cafés still allow smokers to light up.
Spanish doctors and anti-smoking campaigners are calling for a total ban in all pubic places, but 50% of Spaniards believe smoking is an inalienable right, and nearly one-third of adults smoke.
