Stephen Oliver, managing director of the Union Pub Company, has sparked an industry row over a remark he made to the Morning Advertiser. Commenting on the takeover of Scottish brewer and operator Belhaven by Greene King in August, Oliver quipped: " … a pickled egg is regarded as sophisticated in Scotland." David Elliott, Greene King’s managing director, retorted that Oliver had been "offensive to a number of Scots", while Belhaven’s chief executive Stuart Ross, who is Scottish, added that the comment was "as misinformed as it was insulting," before warning: "I don’t know Mr Oliver from Adam, but I suggest he keeps his opinions about Scotland to himself." The paper has dubbed the battle of words the "pickled egg wars".
