Greene King, the brewer and pub operator, is to train staff at its Hungry Horse brand via apps for smartphones and tablets in what it calls the “next generation of learning”.

The initial 14 apps will cover three subjects: steak grilling, burrito preparation and balloon modelling. Each one, accessed via a QR code, contains a video demonstrating the activity being performed perfectly.

Greene King said the apps are used to train new Hungry Horse staff, for one-to-one coaching sessions and for refresher training.

“This is the next generation of learning,” said Greene King group HR director John Smith. “In developing these apps, we have created an innovative, visual and engaging method of training that is able to reach the large number of technology users among our teams.

“Everyone knows that on-going training is vital to maintaining skills and service levels. At all times, it is our aim to achieve consistency across the Hungry Horse brand. We are always looking for innovative ways to use the tools around us to achieve this aim and we have a novel and interactive solution that is adding value.”

Further apps are now being developed on a range of other topics. The app has been developed with Charnwood Training Group.
