Greene King has launched a placement programme to help graduates become pub managers. The scheme, which the group believes is the first one to be introduced in the sector, is a 48-week course that will prepare graduates for the role of pub deputy manager. The programme was piloted last month using a select group of graduate recruits and is designed to give people hands-on business experience whilst undertaking formal studies, which give students recognised industry qualifications. Terri Hardy, project manager for industrial placements at Greene King, said: “We want to encourage graduates to see the pub industry as an inspiring and viable career choice. “We are keen to encourage the best young people into our company and schemes such as this will provide formal training and also highlights the opportunities that exist within Greene King. “Our programme balances hands-on learning with developing theoretical and technical competencies so that graduates will be as adept at changing a barrel as they are at working out profit margins. “Many misconceptions exist about what it takes to run a pub but the new programme will help us put that right and harness today’s best young talent for the future.”
