BrewDog’s Berlin bar will be its first internationally managed site with more to follow, managing director David McDowall told M&C.

McDowall said there were several locations around the world where BrewDog would look to shape the direction of the bars itself. However, he insisted the majority of the c100 international sites BrewDog hopes to have by 2018 will continue to be franchised.

He told M&C: “There are certain places where we feel like we want to take on the opportunity ourselves. Berlin is a perfect example of that – it’s a city that we have really taken to. It’s a place that is so ingrained in the history of beer and it’s a privilege really to be opening a forward-thinking craft beer bar there. We’d like to build a little portfolio in the city and we wanted to start out with a statement site.”

The company will also manage the five brewpubs it is opening at “strategic locations” across the US, which will spearhead a wider rollout across the country.

BrewDog also revealed that over £6m has been raised so far in its Equity for Punks IV crowdfunding campaign.
