The man credited with bringing Chicago's Wimpy burger bars to Britain during the 1960s, Brian Salmon, has died at the age of 83.

While chairman of J Lyons & Co, Salmon streamlined management at the family firm. He also put the company at the forefront of food production technology and expanded ambitiously in the United States and Europe.

Along with his brother Neil, Salmon owned the Strand Hotel chain. They also bought Tetley Tea and Baskin Robbins.

Economic collapse in 1975 forced the brothers to sell Strand Hotels to Forte. Then in 1978, Allied Breweries bought Lyons for £60m and its debt.
