JD Wetherspoon has been accused by the Free Church of Scotland of blasphemy over a Sunday drinks promotion that shows beer bottles with halos and wings.

Wetherspoon says its Sunday Service promotion in Scotland was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek way of highlighting cheap prices.

However, ministers of the church, popularly known as the Wee Frees, and famously puritanical, say using Christian symbols to sell drinks is blasphemy and mocks the West of Scotland's serious alcoholism problem.

A spokesman for the Free Church of Scotland, said: "It is blatant blasphemy - you simply cannot muck about with God.

"There is a real problem with alcohol in the West of Scotland. To tie drinking alcohol in with this religious imagery is to mock a serious problem."

Wetherspoon's spokesman, Eddie Gershon, said: "If it has offended religious groups or people who don't feel that alcohol and the church should mix, we are very sorry." Gershon said the pub chain will investigate the complaints.
