Supermarkets will have shortages of British crops including cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and tomatoes within months because growers are being paid too little to produce them, farmers have warned.

Soaring energy costs this year mean that using heated greenhouses has become increasingly unprofitable, with retailers already importing vegetables from abroad.

Tesco, Ocado and Lidl, among others, are rationing eggs because of supply chain problems — with price rises of up to 20 per cent on some boxes in stores over the past two weeks.
