A landlord in Kent is holding customer's shoes as a deposit to stop them stealing his elaborate beer glasses.

The glasses used to serve the Belgian Kwak beer are shaped like miniature yards of ale, with a wooden frame to keep them upright. The equipment costs landlord John Brice £5 a set, encouraging him to make the security move.

Customers at the Frog and Toad must hand over a shoe for Brice to put in a basket, which is then winched up to the ceiling.

Brice said that no one had, as yet, gone home one-shoed.

A similar deposit system is frequently made in Belgian bars for Kwak glasses.
