One licensee has taken the advice of Prince Charles to heart and made his Surrey pub the focal point for his village.

The Cricketers in Badshot Lea, near Farnham, Surrey, runs a newspaper delivery service and sells groceries, in keeping with the Prince's suggestion that pubs should take on vital village services to survive.

Geoff Shepherd, whose pub is part of Punch Pub Company's Inn Business division, has made up for the closure of the local shop by selling more than 30 key items such as bread, eggs and bacon from 5.30am until 11pm.
