Prime Minister Gordon Brown has held crisis talks at Downing Street in a personal attempt to tackle Britain's "binge-drinking epidemic", says The Independent on Sunday.
Excessive drinking could become as taboo as smoking in public places after experts warned that urgent action was needed to tackle record numbers of people needing hospital treatment for alcohol abuse.
As well as restrictions on advertising, parents will be put under pressure to set a good example by drinking responsibly in the home and could be hit with fixed-penalty fines if their children are caught drinking.
